Mayfield Brain & Spine presents seminar about sacroiliac joint pain

CINCINNATI – It may be responsible for one-quarter of all episodes of pain in low back or buttocks. Yet it is seldom evaluated as a potential culprit.

What is this mysterious cause of misery that can make sleeping, driving and sitting difficult?

The sacroiliac joint.

Mayfield Brain & Spine and SI Bone® will co-host a free seminar about sacroiliac joint pain and the various surgical and noninvasive treatment options on Thursday, April 21, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Rookwood Exchange Conference Room, 3825 Edwards Road, Cincinnati, 45209.

The event’s hosts will be William Tobler, MD, a Mayfield neurosurgeon and spine specialist, and Marc Orlando, MD, a Mayfield physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist.

Dr. Arthur Arand discusses sacroiliac joint pain

The sacroiliac joints connect the base of the spine – the sacrum – to the ilium bones, the largest and uppermost bone in the pelvis. The word ilium comes from the Latin word ile, which means groin or flank. The ilium bones resemble the upper wings of a butterfly.

Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain is caused by damage or injury to the joint, ligaments, cartilage or muscles. SI pain can occur along with other conditions, such as a herniated disc or hip problem. SI joint pain can be caused by many factors, including a fall, car accident, repetitive injury, pregnancy and childbirth, or surgery of the hip or spine.

Diagnosis of SI joint pain involves a medical history, physical exam, scans and possibly a diagnostic injection of a corticosteroid medication. If the pain subsides significantly after the injection, the SI joint can be confirmed as the source of the pain.

Treatments include:

  • physical therapy, chiropractic manipulation and stretching exercises
  • oral anti-inflammatory medications
  • topical patches, creams, salves
  • minimally invasive joint injections
  • minimally invasive SI joint fusion surgery
