Physician spotlight: Rachel Boggus, MD

Dr. Boggus 'jumps' into interventional pain practice at Mayfield

When Dr. Rachel Boggus was a child growing up near Toledo, her family took a trip to a dude ranch out west. She loved the horses, so that led to riding lessons and then jumping through courses. Today, Dr. Boggus travels to amateur events ("hunter jumper" in the lingo) in stadiums around the country. She's even won seven national competitions.

"It's something I really enjoy, both for the competition and the camaraderie," she said. "I just took to it right away."

In early September, Dr. Boggus started at Mayfield, treating patients in the Procedure Suites at Mayfield offices in West Chester and Springboro, near Dayton. She specializes in interventional pain treatments, helping relieve patients' pain so they can heal naturally or better prepare for surgery.

Dr. Boggus' father is an orthopedic spine surgeon, and she sometimes accompanied him on hospital rounds. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, she went to the University of Colorado College of Medicine, his alma mater, where she completed a residency in anesthesiology and a fellowship in interventional and chronic pain management.

"I liked that you could see immediate results from the treatments," she said.

Dr. Boggus' husband Clint grew up in Northern Kentucky, so returning to the Midwest to be closer to their family was always a goal. Their two-year-old daughter keeps them busy with trips to the pool and other activities.

"We constantly try to keep her doing stuff to stay busy," she said.

Dr. Boggus worked for several private practices in Indiana, most recently Indiana Polyclinic in Indianapolis. When an opportunity at Mayfield came open, she was immediately interested. Weekly spine conferences and other collaborations between physicians is just one of the factors. With her training as an anesthesiologist, Dr. Boggus is looking forward to helping patients relieve their pain with a variety of treatments. Beyond epidural steroid injections and spinal cord stimulator trials, her specialties include abdominal and pelvic pain injections and ultrasound guided blocks.

"I really felt like Mayfield was the kind of practice where I could grow and do some new things," she said.
