TriHealth Announces Partnership with Mayfield Brain & Spine To Build Comprehensive Neuroscience Institute

Cincinnati, OH (May 16, 2017) – TriHealth announced today it is creating a comprehensive Neuroscience Institute in partnership with Mayfield Brain & Spine, a world leader in neurological surgery. The Institute will provide state-of-the-art surgical care for the brain, head, neck and spine, as well as advanced stroke care for all patients.

The two organizations have been collaborating for nearly 80 years, and this latest advancement will greatly enhance patient access to the most comprehensive and integrated neurosurgical care in the region. The Institute brings together a powerful combination of world-class clinicians and state-of-the-art technology and facilities from Mayfield Brain & Spine, TriHealth Physician Partners and TriHealth's neuroradiology and neuropathology departments. The Neuroscience Institute will serve as a destination Center of Excellence for neurological and neurosurgical care, offering patients throughout the region a single point of access to a full continuum of neurological services and treatment.

"This is great news for our patients, the community and our two organizations," said Arthur Arand, MD, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Mayfield. "The TriHealth Neuroscience Institute will offer broad coverage across Greater Cincinnati, ensuring our ability to bring Mayfield's highly specialized expertise to patients throughout the area during a time of growing need."

Enhances Commitment to Comprehensive Patient Care

"TriHealth and Mayfield have a long and successful history of collaborating to serve the patients of Greater Cincinnati," said Mark C. Clement, President and CEO of TriHealth. "This expanded partnership with Mayfield, the region's largest neurosurgical group – and one of the most respected in the nation - further strengthens TriHealth's commitment to provide convenient and often life-saving access to unparalleled clinical expertise for patients seeking neurological services in the tri-state region."

Andrew Ringer, MD, Mayfield's Director of Cerebrovascular Surgery, will lead the TriHealth Neuroscience Institute, supported by Dr. Christopher McPherson and Dr. Michael Kachmann, who will serve as Site Directors for Neurosurgery at Good Samaritan Hospital and Bethesda North, respectively, and Dr. Richard Curry, who is the Director of Neurology for TriHealth.

Investments to Expand Services

TriHealth will invest more than $40 million in equipment, specialized staff and facilities to expand upon an already robust neuroscience program across the system. A new neuroscience intensive care and step down unit will be built at Good Samaritan Hospital. TriHealth will also invest in new, state-of-the-art diagnostic, surgical navigation and surgical technologies to ensure patients receive the latest methods of neurological and neurosurgical care and treatment.

History of Successful Collaboration

Mayfield and TriHealth have played major roles in the development of neurosurgery in Greater Cincinnati. Good Samaritan first recruited Dr. Frank H. Mayfield to Cincinnati in 1937. Dr. Mayfield built his practice at Good Samaritan, where he established a community neurosurgery education program and went on to create one of the largest and most progressive neurosurgery practices in the country. He also guided the development of Good Samaritan's current Neurosurgical ICU, which was named in his honor.
