Dr. Lee Greiner carried the Mayfield legacy with grace and skill
For more than 40 years, A. Lee Greiner, MD, was an integral part of Mayfield, starting after his fellowship in microvascular surgery in 1975, to recent years when he still made a point to attend company events.
In between, Dr. Greiner served as chairman of the Board of Directors from 1991-2004, was named Ohio Neurosurgeon of the Year in 2008, mentored nearly 60 medical residents and shepherded Mayfield through a period of growth and new business ventures. He practiced primarily at The Christ Hospital. Above all, he faithfully served Mayfield patients for decades.
Dr. Greiner passed away at home on Tuesday, January 7, at age 85. His family is planning a Celebration of Life at a later date.
"Lee Greiner is a significant part of Mayfield’s history, measured not only by his accomplishment and surgical skill, but by the compassionate way he treated patients, colleagues and associates," said Dr. Ronald Warnick, who has practiced at Mayfield for 33 years and succeeded Dr. Greiner as board chairman. "We will miss him, and we always will strive to live up to the high standards he and others have helped instill at Mayfield."

Dr. Greiner earned his medical degree at the University of California-San Francisco School of Medicine and trained in general surgery at the University of Minnesota Hospitals. After completing his residency at University of California-Irvine, he joined Mayfield for his fellowship in microvascular neurosurgery in 1975 – and stayed for decades.
During Dr. Greiner’s 13-year tenure as chairman, Mayfield added 10 physicians and expanded patient service through the Mayfield Imaging Center, the Precision Radiotherapy Center and an interventional pain suite in Northern Kentucky. He once said his proudest accomplishment was "being part of Mayfield’s continued growth and development into the third generation."
Dr. William Tobler, who worked his entire career in the same office with Dr. Greiner notes, "Lee was a fervent supporter of Mayfield and a direct link to the founders of our practice. He was focused on Mayfield’s mission and believed in making dreams a reality – all for the advancement of patient care."
He often served as one of Mayfield’s unofficial historians. Away from the office, he was a talented piano player and an accomplished competitive ballroom dancer. In 2008, he hosted Mayfield associates and guests for an evening of dance at Arthur Murray Dance Studio.
Throughout his career, Dr. Greiner treated thousands of patients. One acknowledged his impact on their life in a letter, "I have been feeling great since you repaired my spine. You did just what I asked – gave me back my life – and I’ve been enjoying it ever since…Thank you for restoring my pleasantly mundane life. I’ll never take it for granted again."
"Mayfield’s commitment to excellence and patient service is built on the contributions of leaders like Dr. Greiner," said Dr. Vincent DiNapoli, Mayfield’s current board chairman. "As we look to the future with new technology and geographic expansion, that commitment to excellence will never waver."
