Protect your back this winter
As the temperature goes down, make sure your back pain doesn’t flare up. “Cold temperatures can be a distraction, but it’s important to stay aware of how your body is responding,” Mayfield neurosurgeon Randall Hlubek, MD, says. “If you experience any sharp or shooting pain in your back or if your ‘workout soreness’ lasts more than a week, consider seeking advice from your health care provider.” |

Don't delay your care
Michael Kachmann, MD, and his patient, Gina, were featured on Local 12 discussing her experience with worsening back pain after postponed medical care earlier this year due to COVID-19 shutdowns. Within hours after her lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) surgery, Gina says, "I didn't have any back or leg pain, so it's been a life-changing surgery for me."

Know the signs of a stroke because 'time is brain'
Earlier this year, Andrew Ringer, MD, co-authored a study that suggested hundreds of stroke victims delayed seeking urgent care out of fears due to the COVID-19 crisis. Not only were there significantly fewer patients coming to the hospital with strokes, but patients came about two hours later.
Remember the F.A.S.T. acronym, and if you are experiencing symptoms of a stroke, every second matters in your diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

Jonathan Hodes, MD, a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon specialisting in vascular neurosurgery, has joined Mayfield Brain & Spine. He is past chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Louisville, practiced with Baptist Health for many years and held leadership roles. Robotic spine surgery at St. Elizabeth
Mayfield surgeons just surpassed the 200th spine surgery using the Mazor X at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood. Tann Nichols, MD, and patient, Ruth, talk about how robotic spine surgery was used to treat her spinal stenosis. “It was an easy recuperation,” said Tabor. "I didn’t have a whole lot of pain, and it was just amazing. I went back to work after six weeks.”
