4th Annual Brain Aneurysm 3k Mini Walk & Fair set for Sept. 23, 2017

This Saturday, Sept. 23, brain aneurysm patients, survivors, family members and friends will walk to raise awareness and a little money while celebrating lives and recoveries at the 4th annual Brain Aneurysm 3k Mini Walk & Fair.

The walk will begin and end at Vine Street Park in St. Bernard. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., the walk at 10:30 a.m. The fair concludes at 1:30 p.m.

The walk is presented by the Tri-State Brain Aneurysm Support Group, one of the first such support groups in the United States.

Registration is $10.

A brain aneurysm is a balloon-like bulge of an artery wall. As an aneurysm grows, it puts pressure on nearby structures and may eventually rupture, according to the Mayfield Clinic. Most people find out they have an unruptured aneurysm by chance during a scan for some other problem. The risk of rupture varies depending on the aneurysm location and size. Treatment options include observation, clipping, coiling, or bypass.

Approximately 5 percent of the population may have or may develop a brain aneurysm. About 20,000 Americans will experience a ruptured aneurysm in a given year. Risk factors include family history and tobacco use.
