Mayfield Brain & Spine hires three pain specialists for expanding nonsurgical service line
CINCINNATI– Mayfield Brain & Spine is proud to announce the hiring of three board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians to provide nonsurgical treatment for patients who experience acute or chronic pain. The three specialists are Donald Carruthers, MD, Robert Whitten, Jr., MD, and Steven Wunder, MD.
Mayfield's growing nonsurgical program, led by Marc Orlando, MD, strives to help patients achieve optimal function and quality of life and to reduce pain through physical therapy and interventional pain management procedures. Non-invasive treatments can include massage, exercise, and braces, while interventional procedures include epidural injections, facet joint injections, spinal cord stimulation, and radiofrequency ablation.
Nearly 80 percent of Mayfield's spine patients are able to recover with nonsurgical treatment.
Dr. Carruthers sees patients in Mayfield's offices in Norwood, Ohio, and Crestview Hills, Kentucky. He specializes in interventional spinal procedures and therapies, such as joint injections, epidural steroid injections, facet joint injections and spinal cord stimulation, for the treatment of low back pain, neck pain, disc herniations, and spinal stenosis. Dr. Carruthers was in practice with Group Health TriHealth Physician Partners from 2002 to 2016. Through a Group Health partnership, he saw Mayfield patients from 2009 to 2014. He earned his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine, in Dominica, West Indies, and completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Dr. Whitten will see patients in Mayfield's office at the Rookwood Exchange in Norwood, beginning in May. He has more than 25 years of electrodiagnostic experience in identifying and treating cervical or lumbar radiculopathies, entrapment syndromes (e.g., carpal or cubital tunnel), and related neuromuscular problems. He was in practice with Group Health TriHealth Physician Partners from 2003 to 2014. Through a Group Health partnership, he has treated Mayfield patients since 2008. Dr. Whitten earned his medical degree from West Virginia University, Morgantown, and completed residencies in family medicine at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and physical medicine and rehabilitation at Ohio State.
Dr. Wunder sees patients in Mayfield's office in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. He specializes in musculoskeletal medicine, pain management, and electrodiagnostics, including electromyography and nerve conduction velocity tests. Dr. Wunder was in practice with Group Health TriHealth Physician Partners from 2004 to 2016. Through a Group Health partnership, he has treated Mayfield patients since 2007. He earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Ohio State University.
